Marketer's Guide to Mobile Web Design

Welcome! This is a resource for learning about mobile web design from a marketing perspective. If you don't know (and don't want to know) the difference between HTML and CSS... but you do want to understand how design can affect the bottom line results of a mobile website... lead generation, conversions, online branding, and more... then grab a cup of tea or coffee, because you're in the right place!

The Mobile Landscape

Americans use hundreds of different smartphone to get on the mobile web. For this reason, any successful mobile design will have to be flexible and adaptable.

To get a sense of the variety, the latest US mobile market statistics reveal that among all American mobile subscribers, only 23.1% own an iPhone. Android devices are more popular, at 30.9%. But there is much greater variation among Android handsets, making testing across different Android phones necessary. Most Americans own something other than an iPhone or an Android device.

There is a reason I am telling you this. Sometimes a mobile website will end up being optimized for only one platform - often the iPhone. But an iPhone-only design may have serious defects on the 76.9% of mobile users with a different handset. Imagine how much that can drag down conversions!

Insist on multi-device support from your mobile designer. When choosing a mobile designer, ask what phones they have in their office for testing.
